The Evolution

2023-24

Classroom-Wide Implementation and MILE Training Design:

MILE is expanding and recruiting teachers across school boards in Alberta and beyond. Throughout 2023 and 2024, teachers received professional development training on MILE and subsequently implemented MILE in their classrooms. After evaluating the effectiveness of MILE when implemented classroom-wide, we are now hoping to extend our reach through an online, accessible, sustainable teacher training platform that all teachers across Canada will be able to access.

Community of Practice Adaptation:

A Community of Practice (CoP) was established in Edmonton to help adapt MILE for classroom-wide use. This platform was designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among educators, researchers, and school administrators, ensuring the continuous improvement and adaptation of the MILE program. The main goals of the CoP were to adapt the MILE program for classroom-wide delivery and focus on all students, including those with learning difficulties.

2016-17

Classroom Implementation for Children with Learning Difficulties:

Researchers and teachers in Edmonton implemented MILE in small groups across schools to support students aged 5-8 with various learning difficulties. The research suggested that MILE maintained its effectiveness.

2013-14

Children with FASD in Edmonton, Canada:

The first Canadian MILE study was conducted in Edmonton, Alberta. It involved individualized interventions in home or school settings with children aged 4-10 with PAE or FASD. This iteration of MILE excluded the parental component. The results showed that MILE led to improvements in student math scores.

2015

Community Translation in Atlanta, USA:

In Atlanta, USA, MILE was delivered in a community setting for the first time to students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The MILE intervention was expanded to 15 weeks, and MILE maintained its efficacy when delivered in a community setting.
